Datacenter power trends and things you can do at the server level

As nearly every datacenter either evaluates or provides you with a price increase, it becomes time to examine your options.

You can

• Take the hit and absorb the price rise 
• Look to move elsewhere (typically somewhere that's less connected or has more empty space)
• Stay in the same location but switch your servers to higher-density upgrades

Focusing on this last suggestion, users who are subject to price rises, typically, have been running in the environment for a significant period of time. One advancement the major server manufacturers have made over the years is making their servers more power efficient. A lot of the CPU manufacturers over this period have also optimized power output. Using servers like SuperMicro MicroCloud or the FatTwin range,  or indeed any other blade-based, high-density server, you can migrate out of traditional 1U or 2U servers that are extremely power sensitive and move into a more optimal solution for the ever-changing power landscape.

For example, a set of 40x standard 1U Single CPU servers can run 1-3kW* per month more than the same amount of servers in a MicroCloud setup (*depending on the other parts, and workloads being run). With major datacenter prices hitting approx $400/kW per month, changing to a highly-dense infrastructure can mean the savings would be significant.
