Server Talk Episode 2: What are GPUs?

What Are GPUs

As we wrap up a week of the GPU Technology Conference, GPUs are obviously a hot topic on everybody’s mind. GPUs – graphics processing units – have been in production for years, utilized in everything from gaming and media to scientific and engineering computation. But do you know exactly what a GPU is and what it does? What is a GPUs? "Server Talk" hosts Alexey and Mike are back with episode 2 to answer this very question! (Download Transcript) A GPU is a processor… much … [Read more...]

Intel MIC and its Comprehensive Networking Strategy

aubrey-isle-featured

Last week we talked about the upcoming release of Intel's Xeon E5 processor family. This week, we have some even more important announcements regarding Intel MIC and the strategic direction that Intel is headed regarding high performance computing. … [Read more...]

ICC releases NVIDIA powered Tesla GPU SimCluster

Last month we announced our new line of GPU supercomputing products powered by NVIDIA. These recent releases were only the build up to the real GPU highlight coming out - ICC NovaServ™ Tesla GPU SimCluster solutions. Integrating cutting-edge technology from our industry-leading partners, ICC's NovaServ™ Tesla GPU SimClusters are ready-to-deploy cluster solutions off the shelf, delivering the power of CPU-GPU parallel processing. The 1U 6016GT-T is a powerful stand-alone system. But the … [Read more...]

New GPU Solutions for Grid Computing and other Supercomputing Needs

We've just launched two new GPU products, along with our new GPU supercomputing solutions section! GPU computing is the use of a graphics processing unit (GPU) in computing purposes, from general-purpose to supercomputing tasks. With a constantly increasing demand for greater computing performance across the board, supercomputing is more and more drawing upon a hybrid model which integrates the roles of GPUs and CPUs. If you are looking to gain a performance boost in your cluster or grid … [Read more...]

GPU workstation sale (and other news)

Wow, this is the first update in a while on the ICC blog. We have been working on several web-based projects that have been keeping us busy, and I would like to highlight some of them (and other news) in this post. Website and product news First of all, as you may have noticed, our HPC by ICC section of the site launched earlier this month which describes ICC solutions for high-performance computing clusters. There is an outline of the Platform Computing HPC Suite, an industry-leading cluster … [Read more...]

GPUs in the news: medical imaging

Next time you feel like bemoaning the state of today’s big thumbed, small minded, video-game generation, think about the social benefit all those gaming man-hours are contributing to medical research. A team from UC San Diego created an algorithm for CT scan image reconstruction using an NVIDIA GPU, discovering, in the process, the superior effectiveness in creating  targeted images of tumor cells. This improvement over traditional medical scans reduces the total radiation cancer patients … [Read more...]

AMD Fusion processors – from GPU to APU

GPUs (graphics processing units) are a favorite topic on this blog. It is an innovative and powerful computing idea with an almost awkward origin: the graphics card, which has in the past been used to perform calculations necessary for visual rendering, is now used in GPU applications to help the processor perform millions of general computations. In effect, the GPU becomes a specialized processor in the computer. GPU products have been soaring in popularity recently, especially for … [Read more...]

Performance improvements and energy efficiency for HPC data centers

Scientific Computing magazine's latest Q&A article addresses a topic very important to most professionals who own or operate a data center: how to improve performance and save money on energy costs. The magazine asked seven industry leaders in the HPC industry for their opinions about this subject. Their answers are very telling and reveal the state of data center technology today and the directions it will likely take in the near future. Reducing the cost of power consumption Perhaps … [Read more...]

GPUs in the news – medicine

NVIDIA, a maker of GPUs, reports that it has launched AMBER 11, a new version of a program that is frequently used by scientists to aid in the discovery of new medicine. This version of the program is optimized for GPUs, allowing scientists to use private workstation computers instead of public supercomputers to run the same computational load. From the article: “The supercomputing resource we use is constantly over-subscribed, forcing us to wait a day or more to run a simulation, … [Read more...]

GPUs in the News – data mining

To continue our series about HPC (high-performance computing) in general and GPUs (graphics-processing units) in particular, I will write today about a real-life application of GPU technology in business. NVIDIA blog has an interesting mini-case study about how one German company is using GPUs for business analysis applications. Jedox AG produces a software called Palo Suite that uses a technique called OLAP (short for online business analytical processing) to make large databases manageable … [Read more...]
